about

Loretta Lynn once wrote a song entitled “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” that became one of the 100 most loved songs of all time. I think the imagery behind the title (more than the song itself) was the inspiration for me.

This album recalls the three year journey of becoming a father to my little girl. My wife and I had fostered our daughter as a baby for twelve months, then we returned her to her birth mom and temporarily lost contact for what what seemed like the darkest period of our lives. “Coal Miner” was written after my wife and I were reunited with her after her birth mom graciously invited us to become godparents.

Because my daughter did not have a relationship to her birth father, I became her primary father figure. The honor of that role never left me and it is beyond my wildest joy that she calls me Daddy today. The song was written long before I knew I would be able to adopt her. The outro, in which I sing “it’s going to be alright” was a desperate statement of hope – not one of triumph – but one with deep sorrow and hopeful determination.

lyrics

COAL MINER

I’m shoveling coal into a hole
in the furnace of my heart.
This engine of old silent and cold
will fire to the light of your spark.

Blue birds they fly
in the sparkle of your eyes
(blink and they will flutter).
Girl don’t you cry
It’s going be all right
(It’s a world of wonder).

You were three days old
I was feeling so bold
I held your little heart next to mine.
And when you would go I’d hope that you’d know
the sound of that big drum of mine.

Blue birds they fly
in the sparkle of your eyes
(blink and they will flutter).
Girl don’t you cry
It’s going be all right
(It’s a world of wonder).

It’s going to be all right
